Gone But Not Forgotten

As I celebrated Christmas with my family, filled with smiles and laughs, I couldn't help but think about the day after Christmas. Today would have been the 24th birthday of my cousin, Demone McDougald. Demone was the sweetest dude with a smile that could light up a room. His life was recklessly cut short in a brazen act that is all too familiar within the Buffalo community. Demone was murdered in what police say was an attempted robbery. According to his mom, all Demone had on him was a wallet with just his ID and bank cards inside, a chain, and a pair of earrings.

My first reaction was hurt, followed by an indescribable anger. Why do our young people kill over the dumbest shit? Girls/dudes,drugs, money etc. Why did it have to be Mone? I mean he was a good kid, never wrapped up in any bs, mentored young kids, and would never hurt anyone. Why? In my heart I believe it was deeper than a robbery...but either way, I know Mone didn't deserve that. So why?

I realized at his funeral that I was to busy worried about the why's, instead of focusing on who, what, and where. Demone was a dude WHO left a lasting impression on anyone he crossed paths with. Demone knew WHAT he was doing in life and had a close relationship with God.And there is no question WHERE Demone is...he's in heaven with that same bright smile on his face that I will never forget.

Happy Birthday Mone. We love you.
